Cape Sanctioned Routes
The value of travelling to Cape Town, South Africa, to swim our 2 well known and iconic swims, False Bay and Robben Island, is the large number of vastly different swims presented by the Western Cape.
We are spoilt by having easy access to swims in:
- The Indian Ocean waters of False Bay offering the following popular routes:
- Cape Point – probably the most visibly stunning swim you will ever do
- Simons Town to Muizenberg – testing 10km swim
- The cold Atlantic Ocean offers many stunning routes all along the coastline from Kommetjie right up to Yzerfontein on the west coast.
- Protected waters of Langebaan Lagoon:
- Popular steppingstone to a Robben Island crossing between Preekstoel and Langebaan main beach. Ideal tidal assisted 7km swim to prepare for your big swim from Robben Island.
- Step up the 7km swim to a 11,5km swim with no tidal assist on the additional 4,5km. Real mental test once you pass out of the tidal flow into the still water.
All these routes are sanctioned by the CLDSA and by registering your swim you become part of the rich history of open water swimming in the Western Cape.
Big Bay Events pilots are experienced in all CLDSA routes having successfully supported many swimmers on all routes and having been instrumental in founding many of the newer routes.
Robben Island
Derrick provides boat support for over 200 Robben Island Channel crossings per annum, with an even split between “speedo” and wetsuit swims.
False Bay
Derrick has been involved in the planning, scheduling, and piloting of 5 of these crossings, and coupled with 100% success in all False Bay attempts, makes him the undisputed leader in supporting this swim.
